Technical Description of Hawatour Nail Clippers  

Introduction:

A Nail Cutter is a hygienic-hand tool that is used for trimming fingernails as well as toenails (Andres, 2018). Nail cutters are used all around the world as a cheap, portable, and easy way to maintain nail length and hygiene. While nail cutters have existed since ancient times, the modern nail clipper is only two centuries old. In the past, people have used sharp objects like knives and razors to trim their nails. But in 1875, Valentine Fogerty patented the design for an improved nail cutter. This design became popular and with the increase of industrialization, gained widespread recognition. This design was improved on by other inventors including adding a file, curving the blade etc. Finally, in 1947, William E. Bassett developed on this design by adding two nibs to stop sideways movement of the lever (Smith, 2017). This design has now become ubiquitous as the nail clipper known to people worldwide.

Hawatour is a creator of beauty and personal care products. According to Justia Trademarks, the Hawatour Brand was established in 2016 by Shenzhen Leci Trading Co., Ltd. The Brand Review website FindThisBest lists Hawatour’s top-selling products as nail clippers, dog nail clippers, and hair removal tweezers.

Nail clippers can be made from stainless steel, aluminum or plastic. (Wikipedia, n.d.) However, stainless steel is the most popular option by far. Some nail clippers come with a nail file attached for polishing the sharp edges left after the nails are trimmed. Nail cutters can be straight edged or they can be curved. When they are curved, they can be concave or convex shaped (Barnes, 2020). Concave shapes curve inwards while convex shapes curve outwards. Fingernail clippers tend to be concave shaped while toenail clippers tend to be straight or convex shaped. Hawatour toenail clippers are also larger than their fingernail counterparts.

Technical Description:               

The Hawatour Nail Clipper is composed of 3 main parts: the lever, the pin, and the cutting head (Andres, 2018).

The cutting head consists of two curved, sharp blades that are angled towards each other. The blades are sharpened to a thin edge to ensure clean and precise cuts without causing any damage or splitting to the nails. One end of the blades is welded together and is immovable. The other end is connected to the lever using the pin and can be moved up and down. The pin is a small cylindrical piece of metal that is used to hold the device together. It helps the lever to apply force on the blades. In order to cut a nail, the nail is placed between the blades and then the lever is pressed.

The Hawatour Fingernail Clipper is made of high quality 430 stainless steel covered in baked enamel finish (Amazon, n.d.). The length of the clipper is 2.28 inches. The letters ‘Hawatour’ are etched on the lever in silver coloring. The blades of the fingernail clipper are curved in a concave shape to fit the shape of the user’s fingernails. The bottom half of the lever (the side farthest from the pin) is designated as the ‘Anti-Slip Handle’ and is ribbed for better grip and ease of access. The grip allows the user to apply less pressure on the lever and still get the necessary leverage. There is a ridge at the middle of the lever that separates the smooth section from the bumpy section.

Usage Instructions:

In order to operate the Hawatour Nail Clipper, first the user should rotate the lever around the pin. This will cause the lever to go from a horizontal straight position to a sloping position. It will also be inverted from its original position. Now, it is ready for use. The user should put their nail between the blades of the clipper and press firmly to cut the nail. Care should be taken that only the protruding white part of the nail is cut and not the red colored nail bed as that will cause bleeding (Gehrke, 2021). After the nails are cut, the sharp edges on the nail can be polished using the nail file.

Its main components are the lever, the pin, and the cutting head. The cutting head consists of sharp, curved blades, while the lever allows for controlled pressure during nail trimming. The pin holds everything together. Some clipper also come equipped with a nail file for nail grooming. With its simple yet effective design, the nail cutter plays a vital role in personal grooming by ensuring clean and precise nail trimming.

Reflection:

• The idea of analyzing a nail clipper came to me as I frequently use it but do not know how it works.
• While researching for nail clipper technical descriptions, it was difficult to find good sources for it. Perhaps because of its ubiquity or its simplicity, there aren’t many scholarly articles on it.
• I was surprised to find out how recent the invention of the nail clipper we use is. I expected it to be fairly older. While people did cut their nails, they used knives and other sharp objects. I also found speculation that people who did manual labor may have their nails naturally rubbed off. I am not sure how accurate that is. But in the past, having long nails was seen as a sign of aristocracy.
• Because of the technical nature of the paper, I had to be careful when writing definitions and analyses of different parts. While I don’t want to plagiarize, it is difficult to change too many words without damaging the scientific accuracy of the subject material.
• My biggest challenge in writing this essay was time management. I have had problems with time management in the past but on this occasion, things got much worse than it had in the past.
• One of my biggest challenges is getting started when writing anything. I try to write the perfect introduction and this ends up costing me more time than I can afford. However, once I get started, things tend to flow pretty fast. In the future, I would like to start in the middle and work my way up and down. That way, I won’t get stuck in the introduction.
• Another problem I encountered was not reading the syllabus properly. This led me to not realize that the deadline for submission had passed causing me to be late for multiple assignments including this one.
• I also did not realize that I had to submit a formal letter as an assignment as I had thought submitting it in the discussion board would be enough. In the future, slowing down and reading the material thoroughly will help me to keep track of deadlines.
